Our photographer, Steven Stiefel, captured these images of Southern Railways 2-8-0 No. 630, a steam engine, as it passed through Fort Payne, Alabama, past the 1891-constructed Fort Payne Depot, on the trip between the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Attalla, Alabama.
These locomotives are fueled by burning coal, wood or oil, to produce steam in a boiler, which drives the steam engine. This particular engine is diesel-assisted. The train operators must lubricate the pistons and valves every 100 miles.
